Diaz was born on August 30, 1972, in San Diego, California. Her parents are Emilio and Billie Diaz. When she was 16-years old, Diaz was signed by Elite Models and moved away from her hometown in Long Beach, California, to pursue a modeling career. For the next five years, Diaz lived in exotic locations such as Paris, Japan, and Morocco.
In 1994, Diaz returned to the USA and began pursuing a career as an actress. Her first major film was The Mask; she was hired for the role even though she did not have any previous acting experience. Diaz was nominated for several awards for her work in this movie and it became one of the top grossing films of the year.
After The Mask, Diaz co-starred with Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding in 1997 and There’s Something About Mary in 1998. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in this role. Some of her other recent movies include Vanilla Sky, Charlie’s Angels, Shrek, Knight and Day, and The Green Hornet.
