Cate Blanchett's Education Background
Catherine Élise “Cate” Blanchett was born May 14, 1969 in Ivanhoe, Australia. She is the daughter of June, an Australian property developer and teacher, and Robert “Bob” Blanchett, a Texas-born US Navy Petty Officer who eventually worked as an advertising executive. Blanchett has two siblings: a brother, Bob, and a sister, Genevieve.
Blanchett attended primary school in Melbourne at Ivanhoe East Primary School. For her secondary education, she attended Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School and then graduated from Methodist Ladies’ College. Blanchett discovered her love for acting during her time in secondary school. She studied Economics and Fine Arts at the University of Melbourne. She eventually left Australia to travel overseas.
When Blanchett was eighteen she went on a vacation to Egypt. A guest at her hotel offered her a chance to be an extra in a movie. Blanchett accepted and found her calling. She returned to Australia to study at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. Blanchett graduated in 1992 and began her career in the theater.
Blanchett’s first major stage role was opposite Geoffrey Rush in the 1993 play Oleanna. She won for the Sydney Theatre Critics’ Best Newcomer Award for her performance. Blanchett starred in several minor television roles through out the early 1990’s. She made her international film debut in the 1997 film Paradise Road. Blanchett landed a leading role the same year in the movie Oscar and Lucinda.
In 1998 Blanchett’s international high-profile was established with her role in Elizabeth. She portrayed Elizabeth I of England and was nominated for an Academy Award. She won the British Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her performance.
In 2005, Blanchett won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator. In 2007, Blanchett was named as one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” and also one of the most successful actresses by Forbes magazine.
