Miranda Cosgrove Chooses Acting Over College
Miranda Cosgrove is an American actress and singer who is probably best known for her leading role in the Nickelodeon channel television show, iCarly. The show premiered in September 2007 in the USA and is now aired in several other countries, such as Canada and the United Kingdom. Cosgrove has also appeared in several movies, such as School of Rock and Yours, Mine, and Ours.
However, as is stated above, Cosgrove is probably best known for portraying Carly Shay and recently signed on to earn a seven-figure salary for her work on the show. That’s quite a large salary for a young actress who is only 17-years old, and it doesn’t include the money she earns from acting in movies, nor her income from her singing career.
Considering the huge amount of money that Cosgrove has coming in right now, can you really blame her for deciding to postpone her education for a while in order to pursue her career? According to ContactMusic.com, this is exactly what the starlet plans to do.
Cosgrove was accepted to both New York University and the University of Southern California. These are both very prestigious schools that can be very difficult to be accepted into. One of Cosgrove’s representatives acknowledges that she does want to go to college eventually, but for now “she is delaying her freshman year to stay in L.A. and film a fifth – and perhaps final – season of iCarly.”
What do you think about Cosgrove’s plans to put her career above her education?
“I think that a college education isn’t the end-all-be-all for everyone,” said Linda Murray, an education specialist. “If you have a God-given talent that can sustain you and doesn’t require a college degree, you should pursue that while you still can. People can always go back to college when they are older.”
Suzanne Gabrielsen, a graduate student at the University of Minnesota, thinks that balancing the two is the best option: “I think that if you can do it right, you should do both. Otherwise, from a return-on-investment standpoint, education is the safer option.”
If I have to be completely honest, I have to agree with Jade Pierce, a freshman at the University of Oklahoma, who said: “I think that for my entertainment, they should keep their careers going. I don’t care if Justin Beiber can do calculus or if Miley Cyrus can quote Socrates. That doesn’t really matter to me as long as they keep doing what they are good at.”
Cosgrove isn’t the only young celeb to postpone her education in order to pursue her career. Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and Zac Efron are other young celebs who are putting their educations on hold for a while.
