Obama Urges College Students to Get Involved in Midterm Elections
College students have a lot going on in early November. Aside from being ready to head home for good food during the Thanksgiving holiday, students are working hard to pass tests, complete projects and get their homework turned in on time.
President Obama wants to add just one more thing to your college to-do list: vote. The president is calling on all college students and young people to get involved in politics and to participate in the November midterm elections.
The president is sending a message to young people across the country that election time is a very important time in our country. Young voters generated a large turnout and a lot of excitement in 2008 when the president was elected, but voter turnout has gone down drastically since then. One of the issues that could affect college students include cuts in student loans due to the GOP push to extend all of the tax cuts that were placed during the Bush administration.
In order to keep things moving, young voters must continue their zeal and involvement. As young people, it is important to realize the votes you cast now have a bearing on your future. The president is concerned that many of the excited voters from the 2008 campaign will fall into the trap of only getting involved when there is a presidential election. In order to ensure that changes are made, he appeals to students to remain involved in all elections that come up.
For some college students, voting simply isn’t a top priority. Midterm elections don’t get nearly as much coverage as some of the larger campaigns and students can easily fall into their routines without even thinking about voting. Of course voting does mean that you must get registered ahead of time if you are not already registered, and for college students living away from home, this can be a problem if you don’t register in time. Most people will not make a trip home during the week to cast their vote, so it’s important to register according to where you live when the election will take place.
For many states, online registration deadlines are in early October, so be sure to check that out. Registering online only takes a few minutes and you can do your civic duty by voting in the midterm elections.
