Oscar De La Hoya's Education Background

Oscar De La Hoya was born on February 4, 1973 in Montebello, California. De La Hoya comes from a line of boxers. His grandfather Vincente, father Joel Sr., and brother Joel Jr. were all boxers. De La Hoya attended Ford Boulevard Elementary School in Los Angeles.
De La Hoya’s amateur career was very successful. At the age of seventeen, De La Hoya won the U.S. National Championship at featherweight and was the youngest U.S. boxer at the 1990 Goodwill Games. There, De La Hoya won the gold medal. De La Hoya also took home the Olympic gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. De La Hoya was the only U.S. boxer to take home a medal from the Barcelona games.
De La Hoya’s professional career began in November 1992. In his twelfth professional fight, De La Hoya won his first world title, he was only 20 years old. De La Hoya went on to win the WBO junior lightweight title.
De La Hoya’s boxing career advanced through six weight classes. He ended his career as a middle weight boxer. De La Hoya was the “Fighter of the Year” in 1995. In 1997 and 1998 De La Hoya was the top rated Pound for Pound fighter in the world. De La Hoya founded Golden Boy Promotions in 2001. The combat sport promotional firm represents several boxers. De La Hoya is the first American of Hispanic descent to own a national boxing promotional firm.
De La Hoya officially retired from boxing at a press conference on April 14, 2009. During his career, De La Hoya has defeated seventeen world champions and world 10 world titles in six different weight classes. De La Hoya has generated more money than any other boxer in the history of the sport.
