Pretty Ladies Need Not Apply: Why You Shouldn't Put a Photo in Your Resume
Many recent college graduates are having a hard time finding a job. Of course a main contributor to this problem is that there are not as many jobs to be had thanks to a bad job economy. However, if you are an attractive female it could be something on your resume that is keeping you from succeeding.
A study by Bradley Ruffle at Ben-Gurion University and Ze’ev Shtudiner at Ariel University Center found that if an attractive woman included her photograph on her resume she was less likely to land the job than an unattractive woman who did the same thing or a woman who did not include any photos at all. Overall, including a photo in your job application reduces your chances of scoring an interview with the company by up to 30 percent.
What could be causing this problem? The researchers believe it comes down to “female jealousy of attractive competitors in the workplace.” Let me explain. Ninety-three of the job recruiters that were interviewed in this study were female. The researchers believe that these women did not want to have competitors who were more attractive than they were and many also thought it was unprofessional or distasteful for women to include their photos with their job applications.
If you are one of the lovelier ladies out there, don’t worry: this doesn’t mean you will never be successful in the job world. In fact, after you land a job, being attractive is actually a benefit. The study also found that attractive people tend to earn more money than unattractive people while also being perceived as more trustworthy and competent.
In an ideal world, what we studied in school and did at the workplace would influence how our coworkers see us. However, it seems that this study is just confirming how non-ideal our world really is.
