Updated September 2010

Being deemed a safe driver by an automotive insurance company is a way individuals are able to save on their car insurance rates. There are many different ways to be considered a safe driver in the eyes of an insurance company, one of which being driver’s education.
New drivers are a group of consumers being hit hard by high automotive insurance rates. The only way to combat these financially taxing rates is by educating the young drivers.
Top insurance companies give special discounts to teenagers who participate in driver’s education programs. Not only that, but some of the major insurance companies also give discounts to students with good grades. These discounts might seem too good to be true, so here is a list of the major automotive insurance companies that offer discounts to students that choose to educate themselves on the road.
Company and Discounts Offered:
AAA: Good Student and Driver Improvement Program
Allstate: Good Student Discount
Esurance: Good Student
Geico: Driver’s Education and Good Student Discount
GMAC: No student discounts available
Nationwide: Drivers Education and Good Student

State Farm: Defensive Driving Class and Good Student
Most insurance companies define “good student” as anyone under age 25 in high school or college who maintains a 3.0 GPA or better with a full-time enrollment status. State Farm extends that to students ranked in the top 20 percent of their class and students on the Dean’s List or honor roll.
This will of course vary by insurance carrier and by state, so be sure to confirm student discounts with your insurance agent.
